PASSING OF POLICE SERGEANT CHRISTOPHER THOMPSON
Town of Newburgh Police Detective Christopher Thompson entered into rest surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 8, 2026. He was 35.
Throughout his career, Detective Thompson served the Town of Newburgh Police Department in numerous roles and was a valued member of several specialized units. He served in the Patrol Division, as a K-9 Handler with the K-9 Unit, an active Firearms Instructor with the Firearms Unit, a General Topics Instructor, and a Team Leader on the Department’s Tactical Unit. Most recently, Detective Thompson served as an Investigator in the Detective Bureau.
Chris is survived by his wife, Erin M. DeGraw of Newburgh; his mother, Carol Green of New Hampton; mother-in-law Sharon DeGraw of Newburgh; sister-in-law Tara (Robert J.) Falco; brother in law Evan (Allison) DeGraw; father in law’s fiancé Christina Dorrmann; uncle Hass and aunt Kelly Hassan; and cousins, Ryan and Tyler (Clarice) and their two children Scarlett and James. Chris was predeceased by his father-in-law, Andrew “Andy” DeGraw, and his K-9 partner, Durak.
On May 10th 2026, by a unanimous vote of the Town of Newburgh Town Board, Detective Thompson was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
